Created in 1850, bergamotes have become the confectionery emblem of the beautiful city of Nancy in the northeastern Lorrraine region. Bergamotes are made with sugar and essence of bergamot, a small yellow citrus fruit whose fragrant scent is also used in Earl Grey tea. These delicate hard candies look like translucent amber.
Confiserie Stanislas is Nancy's most renowned confectioner. It is named after 18th century's King Stanislas who, after losing his kingdom of Poland, was made Duke of Lorraine by his French son-in-law Louis XV.
